The Kandy to Ella train is consistently ranked among the most scenic rail journeys in the world. The route crosses Sri Lanka’s hill country, passing emerald tea estates, waterfalls, and villages clinging to steep slopes. For many travelers, it is the highlight of their entire trip.
Route overview
The full journey from Kandy to Ella takes approximately 6–7 hours on the regular service, though many travelers board at Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) or Haputale for a shorter scenic segment. The famous Nine Arch Bridge is near Ella station.
How to book train tickets
- Reserved seats: Book 1st or 2nd class reserved seats in advance through the Sri Lanka Railways website or at major stations
- Unreserved: Cheaper but crowded — not recommended for luggage-heavy travelers
- Observation car: Occasionally available on select services — panoramic windows
Peak season (December–March) sells out quickly. Book as early as possible or ask Global Tours to arrange tickets with your itinerary.
Best seats and timing
Sit on the right side traveling Kandy → Ella for the best views (left side on the return). Morning departures offer clearer views before afternoon mist rolls in. Hang out of doorways only where safe and permitted — exercise caution.
Combining train with a private driver
Most private tours send luggage by vehicle while passengers ride the train — the most comfortable approach. Your driver meets you at Ella station and continues to your hotel. This avoids hauling suitcases through crowded carriages.
What to bring
- Snacks and water (vendors board at stations)
- Light jacket — carriages can be cool and windy
- Camera with charged battery
- Small day bag; keep valuables secure
