Ella is a small town in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province that has become one of the island’s most popular hill-country stops. Surrounded by tea plantations and misty peaks, it offers accessible hikes, iconic train views, and a growing café culture.
Top things to do in Ella
Nine Arch Bridge
A colonial-era railway bridge surrounded by jungle. Check the train timetable to photograph the blue train crossing — most visitors walk from Ella town (about 30 minutes downhill). Arrive early for fewer crowds.
Little Adam’s Peak
A moderate 45-minute hike to a viewpoint over Ella Gap and tea estates. Best at sunrise or late afternoon. Easier than climbing Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) in pilgrimage season.
Ravana Falls
A 25-metre waterfall on the road toward Wellawaya. Popular stop; swim only where safe and permitted.
Ella Rock
A longer, tougher hike (2–3 hours) with panoramic rewards. A local guide is recommended for the unmarked trail sections.
Where to eat and stay
Ella town has restaurants ranging from Sri Lankan rice-and-curry to international fare. Accommodation spans guesthouses to boutique villas with valley views. Book ahead in peak season (December–March).
