Kandy sits in Sri Lanka’s central highlands and was the last royal capital before British colonization. Today it is a UNESCO-listed city best known for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism’s most revered shrines.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The temple houses a tooth relic of the Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka centuries ago. It remains an active place of worship — not only a tourist site.
- Opening hours: Generally morning to evening; puja (ceremony) times draw the largest crowds (typically morning, midday, and evening)
- Dress code: Shoulders and knees covered; shoes removed at entrance
- Duration: Allow 1–2 hours including museum areas
During the annual Esala Perahera (July/August), elaborate processions fill Kandy’s streets — book accommodation months ahead if visiting then.
