Before you book flights, confirm your Sri Lanka visa and entry requirements. Most leisure travelers apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before departure. Rules can change, so always verify on the official Department of Immigration website before you travel.
Who needs a Sri Lanka ETA?
Citizens of many countries — including the UK, EU member states, USA, Canada, Australia, and India — can obtain a tourist ETA for short visits. The standard tourist ETA is typically issued for 30 days, with options to extend in Sri Lanka if needed.
Passport validity: your passport should generally be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank page.
How to apply for the ETA online
- Visit the official Sri Lanka ETA portal (Department of Immigration and Emigration).
- Select Tourist ETA and complete the application form.
- Pay the visa fee by credit or debit card.
- Save the approval email or reference number to show if requested.
Apply at least a few days before travel. During peak season, allow extra time in case of processing delays.
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
Colombo’s main airport is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake, about 35 km north of Colombo city. Immigration officers may ask for:
- Return or onward flight ticket
- Proof of accommodation
- Sufficient funds for your stay
Having a printed or digital hotel confirmation and itinerary helps smooth entry.
Customs and health basics
Declare currency or goods above duty-free allowances. Check current health advisories before travel — requirements for vaccinations or health forms can change.
