Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle covers the north-central plains where Sinhalese civilization flourished for over two millennia. Four UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and Dambulla — anchor most cultural itineraries.
Where is the Cultural Triangle?
The triangle connects three ancient capitals: Anuradhapura (north), Polonnaruwa (east), and Kandy (south — often included as the triangle’s spiritual successor). Most visitors base in Sigiriya or Dambulla for 2–3 nights.
Key sites and what to expect
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
A 5th-century royal citadel atop a 200-metre rock. Famous for frescoes, mirror wall, and lion-paw gateway. Allow 2–3 hours; climb early. Read our full Sigiriya guide.
Dambulla Cave Temple
Five cave shrines with Buddha statues and ceiling murals dating back centuries. Modest dress required; shoes removed before entering.
Anuradhapura
Sri Lanka’s first capital (from 4th century BC). Sacred bodhi tree, enormous dagobas (stupas), and monastery ruins. Best explored by bicycle or vehicle with a guide.
Polonnaruwa
Medieval capital with well-preserved ruins including Gal Vihara rock Buddhas. Compact archaeological park — allow half a day.
How many days do you need?
- 2 days: Sigiriya + Dambulla + one ancient city
- 3 days: All four major sites comfortably
- 4+ days: Add Minneriya safari or village experiences
Practical tips
