Bentota is one of Sri Lanka’s original beach resort towns, located on the southwest coast between Colombo and Galle. Where the Bentota River meets the ocean, a sheltered lagoon creates calm water for sports while the open beach faces the Indian Ocean surf.
Why visit Bentota?
- Wide sandy beach with resort-lined coast
- Water sports — jet skiing, banana boat, windsurfing, and kayaking on the lagoon
- Madu River boat safari — mangroves, cinnamon islands, and birdlife (nearby Balapitiya)
- Close to airport — about 1.5–2 hours from CMB
- Sea turtle conservation projects nearby
Best time for Bentota beaches
The southwest coast is sunniest from December to March when the northeast monsoon affects the east. April is a shoulder month. May–September can bring more rain and rougher seas on this coast — consider the east coast instead during those months.
Things to do
Bentota Beach
Swimming is possible in calmer months; always heed local flags and current warnings. Sunset walks along the sand are a daily ritual.

Bentota in your itinerary
Many travelers spend 2–3 nights in Bentota at the start or end of a tour. It pairs well with Galle Fort (1 hour south) and Colombo city tours (1.5 hours north).
