Five days is enough for a memorable introduction to Sri Lanka if you focus on one loop instead of trying to see the entire island. This 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary balances the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, and the south coast — ideal for first-time visitors with a private driver.
5-day route overview
- Day 1: Colombo / airport → Sigiriya area
- Day 2: Sigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temple
- Day 3: Sigiriya → Kandy (Temple of the Tooth)
- Day 4: Kandy → Galle Fort / south coast
- Day 5: Beach morning → Colombo / airport
Day 1 — Arrive and head to Sigiriya
Land at CMB and transfer north-east to the Sigiriya/Dambulla area (roughly 3–4 hours). Rest at your hotel. Optional evening village walk or early night before the Sigiriya climb.
Day 2 — Sigiriya and Dambulla
Start Sigiriya Rock Fortress early morning to avoid heat and crowds (opens 7:00 AM; last entry typically 5:00 PM). Afternoon visit to Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with centuries-old Buddhist murals.
Day 3 — Kandy
Drive to Kandy (about 2.5–3 hours). Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake, and a cultural dance show if interested. Dress modestly for temple entry.
Day 4 — South to Galle
Scenic drive south through hill-country foothills to Galle Fort. Walk the ramparts at sunset, explore colonial streets, and dine in the fort precinct.
Day 5 — Departure
Relax on the beach near Galle or Unawatuna, then transfer to the airport (2.5–3 hours to CMB — allow buffer time for international flights).
